Multilingualism in education: evidence in practice and policy

Date:  10 to 12 February 2020

Location:  Hyderabad

The key question that was discussed in Hyderabad at the final dissemination event was:  "How can we create learning environments that allow multilingual children to give full expression to their capacity to learn?"  It took place at the English and Foreign Languages University in Hyderabad (India), organised by Dr Lina Mukhopadhyay from EFL-U and Amy Lightfoot from the British Council.

206 teachers, headteachers, government officials, university academics, and NGOs workers attended the event which was held over three days.

Monday and Tuesday, 10 and 11 February 2020

The first two-days workshop's program was for teachers.

Wednesday, 12 February 2020

The last day workshop's program was for policy-makers.

Professor Ianthi Tsimpli, the principal investigator of the MultiLila project, gave a presentation on the project overview and findings.  Watch the video here.  Her presentation aimed to orientate participants about the project and its overall objectives and disseminate the findings about growth in multilingual children’s linguistic, mathematics and cognitive abilities and the factors that appear to have influence.

Professor Theo Marinis' presentation provided teachers with practical ideas and resources that can work toward resolving some of the existing challenges identified in the three sites.

Three of our consultants, Professor Ganesh Devy, Professor Ajit Mohanty and Professor Rama Mathew gave their recommendations to education and government policies based on the project’s findings.
